Editorial policy

Vukla publishes numbers. A number without a source is an opinion, so this page sets out the rules we hold ourselves to.

Sourcing

Every power rating we publish comes from one of three places, in this order of preference. The manufacturer's own specification sheet or product page. A regulator, government body or certification scheme such as Ofgem, the EIA, Citizens Advice or ENERGY STAR. A retailer or specialist energy database where no better source exists, and clearly labelled as such.

Every source is linked on the page it supports. Where we cannot find a source for a figure, we publish the appliance with the figure left blank and the words not published, rather than filling the gap with a guess. Our appliance data file carries a confidence label on each figure for the same reason.

Tariffs

UK costs use the Ofgem price cap unit rate for the cap period we are currently in, for a standard variable tariff paid by Direct Debit, averaged across England, Scotland and Wales. US costs use the most recent monthly residential average published by the US Energy Information Administration. Both are stated with the period they cover on every page that uses them.

Calculations

The arithmetic is set out in full on how we calculate. Nothing is hidden in a spreadsheet. If you disagree with an assumption, the calculator on each page lets you replace it with your own and see the answer change.

Independence

Advertising is sold programmatically and no advertiser sees an article before publication. We do not accept payment for coverage, for a place in a table, or for a particular conclusion. We do not take free appliances in exchange for a review.

Corrections

Errors get fixed in the article itself, not in a note at the bottom nobody reads, and the updated date changes. Where a correction changes a headline figure by more than ten per cent we say so in the text. Report anything you think is wrong to [email protected].

Artificial intelligence

We use software to gather keyword and tariff data. Every article is written, edited and fact checked by a named human being, and the byline on the page is the person responsible for it.
